ABAISSES is proud to present as its initial release Etudes & Vignettes for Electronic Viola; the first explorations and studies with the Electronic Viola built by Brian Lindgren.

Lindgren is a violist, producer and mixing engineer who has been active in the New York City underground and contemporary classical scene since 2007. His upcoming release on ABAISSES explores the potential of the new instrument in development, the Electronic Viola. The ‘EV’ —a frequency modulation synthesizer in the appearance of a viola— utilizes custom FFT algorithms driven by acoustic data from the instrument’s strings.

The story behind the EV is one of determination and persistence —"a thing that needed to be done". The project is a statement of such process; it finds Lindgren in this quest and represents its primal unveiling: the flux and reflux in between an instrument coming to life, developing its own voice, and its creator simultaneously learning how to play it while expanding its musical language.

There is a defiance of time and space at the core of Etudes & Vignettes. Each piece builds a soundscape of its own, bringing to question the sense of vast and finite, the encounter point of the micro with the macro. How much can reside within a minute of sound? We choose.
